Phenakistoscope Animation Machine

I am really interested in the origins of animation, especially the development of Victorian animation machines. My first experiment with these illusions was my phenakistoscope sculpture, made in 2011 for the Sculpture in Context Exhibition in the National Botanic Gardens, Dublin. Built inside a birdcage reminiscent of the Victorian Glasshouses in the Botanic Gardens, it animates a bird flying with a simple crank and pulley system. Thousands of exhibition visitors interacted with the piece during the time it was on display in one of Victorian glasshouses.
