Light Up Dún Laoghaire

"Mara Duit" is a collaboration with cinematographer Esme Pum McNamee. We were commissioned by Creative Ireland and DLR Arts Office to create the animation for projection on the DLR LexIcon Library and Cultural Centre in Dún Laoghaire as part of the Light Up Dún Laoghaire event. I created all our characters and backgrounds using monoprinting techniques, which we moved to create our stop motion. We have gone with a limited colour scheme to draw attention to the main character in our story, the sea itself. The animation captures the shared ritual of sea swimming in the lives of a father and daughter. We interviewed several regular sea swimmers for inspiration and insight into their experiences of swimming in the Irish sea. Many spoke about the peace and clarity that the experience gives them, this is where we got inspiration for our title "Mara Duit" which translates as 'sea be with you', a nod to the ritualistic aspect of the swim and the cleansing of mind, body and soul in the cold water.
